Indiana Dunes East State Park Road Closed Through Winter

East State Park Road at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore will be closed for reconstruction beginning Monday, October 31, 2011. The Federal Highway Administration expects the road to be closed through May 2012. The project will rebuild the intersection at East State Park Road and Beverly Drive to reduce road flooding and improve the wetlands of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes State Park. The Porter County Parks and Recreation Department will host a cookout and public meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. NPS to Conduct Prescribed Burns at Indiana Dunes

The National Park Service (NPS) will conduct six prescribed burns this fall at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Carefully planned and closely monitored burns remove accumulated dead plant material under controlled conditions, significantly reducing the threat of uncontrolled wildland fires in and near the national lakeshore. As days shorten, drivers are encouraged to be cautious as their chances of encountering deer on roadways increase significantly at this time of year. Nearly 50 percent of all vehicle accidents involving white-tailed deer occur between October and December, according to Chad Stewart, deer research biologist for the DNR.
