The Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County recently held its Fine Arts Contest. Club members age 5-18 from the Portage, South Haven, Duneland and Valparaiso Clubs completed artwork throughout the year in the various categories for the contest.

A new drop-in art program, “I Can Do That! Art,” will begin at Westchester Public Library on Saturday, January 8. All ages are welcome, but parents are asked to accompany little ones. In 2011, the National Park Service will implement changes to fees at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The public had a chance to comment on the proposed fee changes last fall. The fees were determined through application of National Park Service laws and policies, a comparison to those charged for similar services in this region, and public input. The Chesterton Middle School Give Back Project will collect items on behalf of the local group Supporters of Military (SOM) from Monday, January 17 through Friday, January 28. This group regularly sends care packages to members of the military serving far from home. The Friends of Westchester Public Library recently received a $1,000 donation from the Thanos family for purchase of audio-visual materials. The donation was given in memory of John and Mark Thanos, Chesterton father and son, who drowned on Sept. 14, 2008 while attempting to rescue a young boy.
