Books bought in memory of Dorothy Hageman on display at Hageman

November 09, 2010

Memorials in Dorothy Hageman's name were used to buy books about birds, photography, and Native Americans for Hageman Library, Westchester Public Library's Porter branch. The books are on display and are available for check-out at the library, 100 Francis Street, Porter.

Dorothy Bowen was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Lafayette, the daughter of Abner H. and Willa Dorothy (Reid) Bowen. She attended Delphi schools and she graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in fine arts.

On June 30, 1951 in Delphi, IN, she married C. Howard Hageman, a Navy veteran of World War II.  Howard was the great grandson of Town of Porter founder Henry Hageman. She and her husband had two daughters, Nancy Hageman of Chesterton and Beth Hageman of Bloomington.

Dorothy was an art teacher for many years in the Duneland elementary schools. She was passionate about teaching the beauties that art and nature possessed. She changed many students' lives by boosting their confidence and making them feel special. She truly believed that things that made people 'different' made them special and was able to impart that feeling to the people that needed it. Dorothy was an active member of the Tri Kappa sorority for many years and she and Howard's hobbies included nature photography and bird watching.

Her husband C. Howard Hageman (born 1919) died on May 15, 1993. Dorothy died Feb. 19, 2010. Howard and Dorothy are buried at the Chesterton cemetery.
