The camping experience at Indiana Dunes State Park will improve thanks to a Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) grant that will pay to reforest the campground with about 80 new trees. In recent years, a large die-off of trees has occurred in the campground as trees of roughly the same age simultaneously reached their life expectancy. The new trees will vary in age and species. Downtown businesses will be offering trick or treating for Duneland families this year on Friday, October 24, from 4-6pm. Parents and their children should look for purple flyers in the windows of participating businesses along Indian Boundary, Calumet and Broadway in Chesterton. The National Park Service is planning five prescribed fires this fall at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Approximately 1,106 acres will be burned. Fire is used as a tool for the park’s long-term restoration efforts. On the east end of Beverly Shores, 186 acres are to be burned between Montana Avenue and Central Avenue Beach.
