The county Board of Commissioners serves as the county’s executive and legislative branch. There are three members elected to this board by the citizens. Porter County is divided into three districts. One commissioner resides in and represents each district. Therefore, citizens vote for one commissioner on Election Day. The four year terms of commissioners are staggered.
The Board of Commissioners is generally responsible for the administration of county business. The Board’s broad set of powers and duties range from maintenance of county property and roads, to establishment of animal shelters and providing 4-H projects, to helping hospitals, and exercising eminent domain.
