Roses and mushroom growth

Question: My hybrid tea roses have been infested with mushrooms growing at the base of the shrubs. This problem has increased after I applied some mulch. I am concerned because the mushrooms have stunted their growth and I do not want to apply mushroom control products such as copper sulphate or consar 20. Mushroom growth indicates acid ph. If I add lime will that eliminate the mushroom growth?

Answer:

This year in our area we have had an excess of mushroom fungus due to heavy frequent rains and cool temperatures. If you are suspicious of an acid ph, test first before you put on lime. Ph may not be the problem at all and if you lime without testing you may be increasing your problem
