Westchester Township History Museum

Larry Vellem will demonstrate Scandinavian weaving at the Westchester Township History Museum on March 14, from 2 – 4 p.m. The museum, which is an educational service of Westchester Public Library, is located at 700 W. Porter Avenue, Chesterton.

Vellem will also discuss his specialty, traditional krokbragd rug making.  Krokbragd is usually woven in stripes of three colors. Other colors can be added to the pattern sequence but using only a maximum of three at a time. The treadling sequence doesn't vary. It is woven in a repeat of 12, 23, 31.A multitude of design possibilities is available to the weaver by varying the placement of the weft colors.

Participants will be able try their hand at Vellem’s tabletop loom and examine his display of hand-woven textiles.  Attendees will also be able to view the museum’s temporary exhibit, “Threads of Time: Historic Textiles and the Stories They Tell.”

Refreshments will be provided.

The Westchester Township History Museum is open to the public free of charge, Wednesday – Sunday, 1 – 5 p.m. or by appointment, 983-9715.
