TweetFriday Night at the Movies will continue Friday, March 12 at 7 p.m. Join Hollywood veteran and Emmy-award winning sound editor Ascher Yates for this free series of critically acclaimed films reflecting themes and concerns of modern life. The movies will be shown at the Westchester Public Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. The March movie will be Moon.
People have established themselves in outer space in Moon. A mineral isotope has been found and mined on the moon and sent back to Earth. The abundant isotope, which is clean and inexpensive, supplies 70% of the energy on Earth. The mining operation is so efficient only one man is needed in the command center to monitor all the various machines and robots. Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) has two weeks left on his three year contract and is anticipating his return home to his wife and daughter.
His daily routine is predictable and dull and the fourteen days left for him seem as though they will never end. His only interaction is with GERTY, the intelligent computer which attends to Sam’s daily needs. However, he gets into an accident and is rendered unconscious. He awakens, injured. GERTY informs him that a rescue team is coming to clean up the accident. Sam takes an unauthorized trip back to the scene of his accident and discovers something that causes him to question his sanity and even his true identity
Moon is rated R for mature themes, with a running time of 97 minutes.
Yates will introduce the film with a short commentary and will lead a discussion afterward for those who would like to linger. Refreshments will be served.
