TweetTheatre students at Valparaiso University will present “Feeding the Moonfish,” by contemporary American playwright Barbara Wiechmann in this year’s 1-2-3-4-5 Production. The performances are free and open to the public.
“Feeding the Moonfish” is a one-act play about a boy and a girl drawn together by natural forces, and the powerful bond they form in one evening on a saltwater dock in Florida. The storyline draws on the power of destiny, the tragedy of murder, the importance of memory and the magical influence of the stars to shape the characters and provide a framework for the play.
Amanda Berrios, a senior new media-journalism and theatre major from Des Plaines, Ill., will direct the production.
“I chose this play because it provides several challenges,” said Berrios. “It forced me to work on a play that’s more serious and a little darker than I typically have, and from an academic perspective, the lighting, sound and costume crews will all be more challenged as well by the depth and skill required.”
Wiechmann is a New York-based writer whose other plays include “The Holy Mother of Hadley,” “New York” and “The Secret of the Steep Ravines.” Her work has been produced at theaters across the country and at theater festivals worldwide.
Berrios has been involved with numerous Valpo theatre productions, including acting roles in “Fuddy Mirrors,” “The Heidi Chronicles,” “The Sausage Eaters,” “Keeping Up ’0,” and “Unity 1918” and as stage manager for “Line.”
Students who direct and act in the annual 1-2-3-4-5 Production have completed a course in play directing. Their production must be no more than one hour long, be given in two performances, be produced within 30 days, be lit by no more than 40 lighting instruments and require no more than five actors.
