TweetCelebrate Poetry Month at the Westchester Township History Museum by playing Prairie Prose, a unique poetry game on Sunday, April 25 at 2 p.m. The museum, an educational service of Westchester Public Library, is housed in the historic Brown Mansion at 700 W. Porter Ave., Chesterton, IN and is open free of charge Wednesday – Sunday 1-5 p.m.
Designed by Janine Fron and Michel Segard, “Prairie Prose” is an independently published game the duo created to bring poetry alive in a playful way that speaks to today’s sustainability issues. It is made from beautiful natural materials.
Prairie Prose is simple to play for children or adults. Players create short, three line poems, also known as “haiku,” using themed words inscribed on hand cut paper petals and gingko leaves for inspiration. Michel Segard has described it as “a game that emphasizes creativity – no violence, no batteries.”
Haiku poems, which originated in Japan, are the shortest form of poetry in the world. Haiku is generally composed of 17 syllables, often in three lines, that can simply be counted as 5-7-5.
Janine Fron is a media artist and game designer who recently taught a game design course at Columbia College in Chicago. Michel Segard is a graphic designer who specializes in packaging and is a former Assistant Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
