Library Film Series to show Sherlock Holmes

Friday Night at the Movies will continue Friday, April 9 at 7 p.m. Join Hollywood veteran and Emmy-award winning sound editor Ascher Yates for this free series of critically acclaimed films reflecting themes and concerns of modern life. The movies will be shown at the Westchester Public Library Service Center, 100 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton. The April movie will be Sherlock Holmes.

Sir Conan Doyle’s tales of his fictional character, Sherlock Holmes, are perennial favorites. This version, however, differs from the cerebral stories of the past: this one is filled with action. Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his faithful sidekick Dr. Watson (Jude Law) apprehend a serial killer, Lord Blackwood, before the police arrive on the scene.

The apprehension accomplished, Holmes puts his mind to marrying. An old flame turns up at 221B Baker Street and offers Holmes a deceptively simple case that he cannot refuse. Once into the case, however, Holmes realizes that he has been duped. He and Watson are involved in a scheme orchestrated by his arch nemesis, the sinister Professor Moriarty, designed to bring them down.

Sherlock Holmes is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some startling images and a scene of suggestive material, with a running time of 128 minutes.

Yates will introduce the film with a short commentary and will lead a discussion afterward for those who would like to linger. Refreshments will be served.

Friday Night at the Movies runs from September – May. The final film for the season, The Young Victoria, will be on Friday, May 14. Westchester Public Library’s Summer Concert and Family Film series at Thomas Centennial Park will begin June 11 at 7 p.m. with the Valparaiso University/Community Band, followed by the movie Free Willy: Escape from Pirates’ Cove.
