TweetWestchester Public Library will host the first Expressive Art with Amy at Thomas Library, 200 W. Indiana Avenue, Chesterton, in the Children’s Department on Saturday April 17 from 10-11:30 a.m. Space is limited, so pre-registration at the library is necessary. Children in Kindergarten through grade six are invited to sign up; parental participation is encouraged but not necessary.
For the first art day, Amy Messacar will focus on using art to promote relaxation and self esteem. She picked art experiences that allow the child to feel a sense of accomplishment after he or she has participated in the art activity.
Children will create a Zen garden, which promotes relaxation. The child has control of what goes into the garden and can take the garden home to continue to work with it.
Soap carving (using a plastic butter knife) will be another enjoyable activity. Attendees will also have the opportunity to work with modeling clay. Modeling clay seems to have a calming effect on children, especially when children don’t necessarily have any particular end product in view.
Messacar received her BA in Elementary Education from Purdue Lafayette and her MA in Counseling and Art Therapy from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. She has been running a weekly after school program at the Hyde Park Day School for the past 5 years, focusing on relaxation, esteem building and problem solving as a group. She has also conducted a few workshops on the use of art to promote communication between parents and young children through Parents as Teachers of Porter County.
For more information about this program and other children’s events, call the library at 926-7696.
