Hairy Woodpecker





Hairy Woodpecker  Picoides villosus 9½" (24 cm)
Note the white back and large bill. Other woodpeckers may have white rumps or
white bars on the back, but Downy and the Hairy are our only woodpeckers with
white backs. They are almost identical in pattern, checkered and spotted with black
and white; the male with a small red patch on the back of the head, the female
without. The Hairy is like a large Downy; its bill is exaggerated compared with the
