Would it be a good idea to put a bat box in my back yard

Posted on June 26, 2006

Question:
Would it be a good idea to put a bat box in my back yard. Would they help control the insects looming around. What are the pro's and con's of having bats as back yard buddies? I do have two dogs that would share the back yard with it.

Answer:
Bat houses give bats the habitat to set up housekeeping. They will feed on insects in your area. Put the houses about 12-15 feet high and out of the way of everyday traffic (including dog traffic, mainly due to the bats being in the bat house resting during daylight hours). Otherwise, you probably wont even know they are there. My two resident bats have lived in our attic for three years now and have been fine.
