Question:
Hi Chuck
I am looking for some information concerning the "wintering" of two Hydrangea plants which were planted this summer? Should we cut them back, and if so, when and how far? These plants were planted in a "shady" area, and have subsequently heard that Hydrangea require "full sun", is that correct?
Thank you in advance for the response.
Frank
Answer:
There are a number of hydrangea varieties with requirements from sun to shade. To know what variety you have would be helpful. For pruning, you can trim slightly after fall dormancy just so branches do not crack down into the crown of the plant through winter. In early spring you will be able to see how far the stalks died back and trim to at least there or shorter. In successive years trim out the largest branches each year to maintain the plant. Good Luck, Chuck.
