Will weed & feed kill birds?

Posted on April 10, 2003

Question:
I am getting ready to use some sort of weed and feed on my yard. I need to use something to tone down some of the weeds and fertilize at the same time. If I choose "Weed & Feed" will it kill birds if they consume it? I currently have a backyard full of all types of birds that I have attracted with feed. I am afraid that the fertilizer might harm them. Any suggestions?? Also. Could you give me a suggestion of the best type of product to use to kill weeds and fertilize, liquid or granule?

Brandon Kliewer

Answer:
Yes, most definitely if they consume the weed killer. The straight fertilizer is not as much a concern however should be watered into the ground after application. Weed killer needs to stay on top to work. You may want to use a spray on a day when you know the air or wind will dry it quickly so the birds do not come in contact with it in a liquid state, or apply right after dusk. There are also organic natural weed killers and even crabgrass and weed preventers that we carry that would be safer for your situation. See us for more details, Chuck.
