What do we need to keep the pond beautiful and weed free?

Posted on October 2, 2006

Question:
We bought a home with a 1/4 acre pond. It was beautiful. But 6 years later, it looke terrible. Weeds in the pond and around it. The pond is used more for the run off water after storms but usually there is some water in it. One side is about 16' deep with an island in the middle. My husband plans to dig out the weeds and make the pond a little larger. What do we need to keep the pond beautiful and weed free? Should the sides of the pond slope in gradually or is it better to go straight down? Should the sides be wrapped in black weed preventer and rocks?
Thanks,
Karen

Answer:
From a safety standpoint sloped sides are better. Putting weed block and rock around the perimeter and part into the water will help keep the edges clear of vegetation if that is desired. An application program of a good, safe algaecide and a weed killer can make the pond more pleasureable. You can also use a dye to help keep the sunlight out so it doesn't generate extra algae. For your size pond you could also add a natural bacterial product for better water quality. See me for setting up a program for your specific pond as each pond is different. Also, we would need to identify what weeds we are dealing with so we get the right product. Give me a call, Chuck
