Question:
Dear Chuck,
What do I do to get rid of the algae on the rocks that the pond water cascades down? The pond water is clear w/chlorine, ph, alkalinity within "pond okay" boundaries on testing charts.
Answer:
Algae is one of the most misunderstood problems in a pond. Is is necessary to have algae's of some types for a natural balance. Some you may not ever see. However, 3 algae's are cause for concern. Suspended, blanket & string algae. The best way is to have adequate filtration and regularly add a beneficial bacteria. Not all bacteria's are created equal (as a result we carry 5 different ones. ) A quick fix for waterfall rocks is to turn it off on a hot sunny day to let the sun kill it. This does not mean it will not grow back quickly. New on the market is a product that is in fact an algaecide but safe for plants and fish. We have had it in store since May and have seen good results depending on the type of algae. However, it will affect the bacteria in the pond so short use is recommended. Happy ponding, Chuck (and Linda)
