Weeds between grape vines

Posted on April 11, 2003

Question:
I have 5 rows of grapes that were on the property when I bought it. They are spaced wide enough to mow between. My problem is in the rows. The grass and weeds grow higher then the vines do! I have pulled and pulled. It is nonstop. I thought maybe using mulch but that could be costly. Any suggestions?

Answer:
You can use a pre-emergent to keep seeds from germinating and then use Hi-Yield Kilzall to kill any weeds that are currently there. As long as the spray does not contact the grape vines it will not kill them. The first year you may need to spray two or three times but in future years probably once will be enough. Continued use of the pre-emergent is necessary to control any seeds that blow in. A good mulching would help too and does not have to be expensive. What are you doing with all your leaves and grass clippings? How about the town recycling mulches? All free of charge. Good luck, Chuck.
