We have to move three fairy rose bushes

Posted on May 20, 2002

Question:
Hi Chuck,
I have tons of mushrooms growing in my shade garden - a very moist area located in a nook of our yard (corner of our house). Any way to prevent them from growing?

Also, we have to move three fairy rose bushes due to a septic system being placed in our neighbors yard. They have not bloomed yet but will soon. Will they survive the transplant?
Thanks.

Answer:
It is hard to prevent mushroom growth when you have such a good environment for them to be growing in. However, there is a spray, Hi-yield Consan, that will kill mushrooms that have come up. Also, sometimes, not always, adding lime to sweeten the soil can help to keep them from returning. As for the roses. It is so close to blooming time that you would loose the first blooms for sure but the plant itself would not be killed. Depending on how much transplant shock it experiences it may have delayed bloom or not bloom at all this year. To lessen transplant shock use Bonide B-1 Plant Starter at time of planting. Also good to amend the soil in the hole with peat and manure when planting.
Good Luck, Chuck.
