Question:
We bought a Nikko Blue Hydrange about 2 weeks ago, and it has been doing very well. We have given him the Miracle Grow w/ Acid. All of sudden this evening, he drooped and looks very bad. Is there a reason for that, rain coming etc? He isn't dying is he?
Answer:
When you dig a hole in clay soil it creates a nice bowl that holds water. In a season such as this year with so much rain, it cannot drain out fast enough. It has been a serious problem in our area & probably in yours.
Only answer is to plant at ground level and mound up around root ball or create drainage to flow somewhere. Remember, even if you put stone in the bottom of the hole or around the soil that you plant into, it is still a clay bowl that does not let water pass through it quickly enough.
