Question:
About two weeks ago, I transplanted a mock orange and a lilac bush from
shady areas to a new bed in the sun. I've been keeping them watered and they have not withered so far. How far back should I prune the branches? The mock orange is apx 5 ft tall and the lilac is apx 10-12 feet tall. Is there any chance they will still flower next year?
Regards,
Linda Moore
Answer:
Mock orange & lilac transplant: anytime a plant is transplanted it can be cut back 1/4 to 1/3 to counteract transplant shock. Most people find this the hardest thing to do but it really helps it establish faster and produces a better structured plant. You may not see blooming next spring due to the transplant alone or a combo of transplant shock and cutting back. Good Luck, Chuck.
