Locating bat houses

Posted on August 21, 2002

Question:
I would like to put several bat houses around my home. My question is: Is there any particular location that is best suited for these houses? My home face directly East/West in central Florida. Thanks for your advice.

Answer:
Bat houses can be mounted 13 feet high to be out of daily traffic. Houses mounted on the warm sides of buildings are more apt to be nursing colonies and cooler houses for males that are not allowed in to nursing colonies. Check out Bat Conservation International for lots of great info on bats. Better yet, join the group and get regular mailings on these fascinating mammals. Good Luck, Chuck.
