Lilac

Question:
Hey Chuck,
I have a question about a Lilac bush that was already established when I purchased my property. The bush was about 4-5 feet in diameter. I trimmed it way back last year, to 5 stalks in the middle. I want this to be "tree like", and don't want all the new suckers coming up. Problem is I have thousands of new suckers coming back around the bush even extending outwards from where it was before. How do I stop this? The bush (tree) bloomed beautifully this spring, I just don't want to have to cut down into the roots, for fear of killing the whole bush. Can you help me?

Answer:
Lilacs have a natural tendency to runner. Just keep cutting them down as you mow. No other way and digging them up will not work. Good luck, Chuck.
