Question:
We live in NE Pennsylvania and have quite a large of a tall, bamboolike weed that takes over everything. We liked it at first, since it provided some privacy to one side of our yard. But now it is invading our lawn, and in a while will be close to our septic leaching field. Only digging seems to slow it down, but not for long. Any suggestions. We'd rather not use chemicals and We're getting a bit old for constant digging. HELP!
Answer:
My guess is that this is phragmites, a very invasive weed that is eating up & filling in our wetlands. I would battle it with constant cutting which has slowed & thinned my stand down, (definitely do not let it plume & go to seed). Hi-Yield aquatic Kilzall with HiYield Spreader Sticker is good if you don't mind a chemical and should be used when the plant is still small or in fall when the plant is translocating its energy to its roots for the winter. This plant should not be allowed to reach your septic field. That will cause great problems
