Question:
Can you give me some general advice on caring for Indian Runner Duck babies? I am having trouble raising them.
Answer:
I had the same experience with a pair of geese I had. The father used to kill the young if he could get to them. I also had a female goose that would sit the eggs very well and as soon as they hatched would kill them. Nature is funny sometimes, ( or should I say brutal). The babies should be kept warm and do not rush getting them to swim in water. They will regulate themselves at the heatlamp, huddling tight if cold and around the outer edge if too warm. Our climate here is very harsh and I would not put them out so young this time of year. They should have their full feathers and even then might be a little tender. Having said all this I tend to error on the side of caution with my poultry. In any case, good luck. Chuck.
