Question:
Hi, I have a few questions. I have two pair of bluebirds in my yard ,isn't this rare for this time of the year, I live in Wheatfield, In. The four birds pretty much stick together in Two mulberry buches I have. I put a couple of birdhouses out for them ,but I can't tell if they are using them yet. I noticed them a week ago. What can I put out to feed them? They have been drinking water & berries (no seeds) Any information would be helpful. Thank You, Connie Nabors-jnabors@netnitco.net

Answer:
Bluebirds have been known to stay all year but there is no real reasons why. Last year we saw them through January & February which were very unseasonably warm. This year is certainly an exception to that. However, the fact that they are here means we can enjoy them for a longer season. The nest boxes will be used for winter roosts if the birds recognize them as such. For actual nesting purposes, make sure the houses are 300 feet apart as bluebirds are territorial in the nesting season. We also sell a feed for bluebirds. As you have found they are not seed eaters. So winter bushes with berries are helpful. The feed is a pelleted feed and can be bought in a special bluebird box feeder to keep other birds out of it. Hope this helps you and enjoy those birds. Happy birding, Chuck
