Question:
Chuck,
I live in Southern Ohio, and I am having a terrible problem with caterpillars. I think they are caterpillars, I have heard others refer to them as "bagworms". They have huge white nests in the pine trees surrounding my house. They have now invaded my deck! I keep finding cacoons everywhere. My deck is covered with these worms. I do not know what to do. I have tried Bug B Gone, but I have had no luck, they just keep multiplying. Help!

Answer:
These are often miss identified as bagworms but are actually tent caterpillars. The tent protects them and as they consume what is inside the tent they expand it to accommodate new food. To control with spray the tents must be broken open to let the spray inside. If not it just lays on the outside of the tent. There are also systemic acecaps which can be implanted in the tree truck that enter the sap and transfer it throughout the tree working from the inside out. This also means it is not affected by rain. Good luck, Chuck
