Ducks moulting, stopped laying

Posted on February 3, 2003

Question:
If my duck was laying eggs every day and now has stopped and looks like moulting as there are lots of feathers around and she is with a male, do I continue to feed them the same and does this happen just before they lay eggs to sit or go clucky. We have only had them for 2 weeks but do not know much about them. I would be pleased if you could help me I feen them some mash and some pellets daily.
Thank you
Raewyne

Answer:
Ducks moulting, stopped laying: It is normal for poultry to stop laying during moulting. There are also many other factors that can effect egg production. A laying mash has nothing magical in it to produce eggs, it is just a high protein diet that keeps the animal in its best condition and the healthier the animal the better it will lay. This will also keep it in peek health during moulting. Warm water through the winter helps the keep egg production up and also a good insulated chicken house. Good Luck, Chuck.
