Question:
Chuck,
A family member has a double purple lilac bush and I would like to get a start from the bush for my own yard. The bush is very old and getting to the roots impossible the way the trunk is....
Is there any way to take a branch from a lilac tree and start roots on it by placing in water, etc. Any suggestions on how to transplant this bush...Do I need to dig it up? Is that the only option?

Answer:
Yes cuttings may be taken from lilacs. Best done in early spring when new growth appears. A rooting hormone is highly recomended for greater success. Good Luck, Chuck.
