Black Walnut near water feature

Posted on July 19, 2004

Question:
Hi, I heard there was a problem adding a water feature under or near a walnut tree is
there is this true and what is the problem.

Answer:
Black walnuts give off a substance called Juglone which is poisonous to other plants. (Ever try to grow tomatoes by a black walnut tree or in its root zone?) Because the pond would have a liner I do not think the roots would be an issue but leaves dropping into it would be.
