Question:
I just bought a Nikko Blue Hydrangea this summer. I live in a zone that does not easily grow the Nikko Blue but was told it is possible. (Mpls., MN, Zone 4) I am wondering what I should be doing to protect this plant and should I be fertilizing it this fall. Also, I'm a little confused as to the best place to plant it. The tag says to plant in full to part sun but I've always thought the Nikko Blue liked shade. Can you give me some advice?
Answer:
Seems we always want something we cant have! I am not familiar with your growing region, but my guess is that you need to scare your plant into blooming. We do this to trees and bushes that are sluggish to bloom. Take a shovel and go around the plant like you are going to dig it to transplant it. It destroys some roots and shocks the plant into creating blooms. If they come out pinkish/white, add more aluminum sulphate. Good Luck, Chuck
