Bamboo, Phragmites

Posted on July 18, 2004

Question:
What products to use to permanently get rid of Japanese bamboo? Thanks.

Answer:
My guess is that this is Phragmites, a very invasive weed that is eating up & filling in our wetlands. I would battle it with constant cutting which has slowed & thinned my stand down, (definitely do not let it plume & go to seed). Hi-Yield aquatic Kilzall with HiYield Spreader Sticker is good if you don't mind a chemical and should be used when the plant is still small or in fall when the plant is translocating its energy to its roots for the winter. This plant should not be aloud to reach your septic field. That will cause great problems. If you are talking of a round leaved bushy plant that dies back to the ground each year and comes from the root each spring then a 24D type weed killer or MSMA is necessary.
