Albino cardinals

Posted on April 10, 2003

Question:
I would like to know if the albino cardinal that feeds at our house is rare, or is it fairly common to see such a bird. I have photos of her, just don't have a scanner to put it on-line for you. Thank you.

Answer:
Although these are not common it does happen in most breeds and are a treat to see. We had a customer last year that had two albino purple martins in one nest. One problem is they are usually weaker than the others and are more susceptible to predators as they do not have camophlage plumage. Enjoy your great find, Chuck.
