Hike and bird watch along the peaceful and diverse Cowles Bog Trail. The moderate to rugged Cowles Bog Trail offers 3 loops totaling 5 miles. Features include interdunal ponds, marshes, stand of northern white cedars, forested dunes, foredunes, and open beach. Hiking Cowles Bog is a great way to experience several different habitats. Excellent for fall colors. A two mile hike concludes with a steep rise up a dune leading to the tranquil beach. You can even anchor your boat and picnic at this beach.
Parking is available in two lots. The first is just over the railroad tracks upon turning north onto Mineral Springs Road from U.S. 12. The second is further north on Mineral Springs, on the right hand side before reaching the Dune Acres guard shack. Bring your bike and ride the 10 mile Calumet Bike Trail from Cowles Bog. There is a porta-potty available at this site.
