Located west of the Burns Waterway Harbor, the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site offers a fishing pier, access to the beach, walkways along the river, a paved hiking/biking trail and parking for 125 cars. The riverwalk is accessible from the north end. You will likely notice the new 900 foot breakwater also.
With lakefront property at a premium even in 1976, Congress added this 57 acre shoreline property to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Formerly used as a landfill by the National Steel Corporation, the national lakeshore could not accept it until it was given a clean bill of health from the Environmental Protection Agency. Today, this renovated area is a terrific example of a National Park Service partnership and a restoration project. Further, the park’s enabling legislation of 1966 allows for cooperative agreements to finance visitor services that the National Park Service could not otherwise afford. With the city of Portage and the Regional Development Authority partnerships, the city of Portage finances the food services and rental of meeting rooms and classrooms in its sleek, earth friendly, fully accessible pavilion. The pavilion has even obtained gold status in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D.) which reviews the environmental footprint over time.
